Human Intelligence on the Web

I recently registered with Amazon's Mechnical Turk, which is an attempt to use human intelligence in web applications via a set of web services.

People are asked questions, or tasks, provide anwsers to the and when the responses are accepted they earn a little cash, with the general hope that those doing more work, earn more cash.

Why the odd name? It is named after a hoax created in 1769 in which a Hungarian created a device that fooled people into beleiving he has created a mechanical human intelligence machine that could beat people at chess. Of course it was later discovered each move was masterminded by a human inside the machine.
